Leukemia Therapeutics Leukemia is a type of blood cancer caused by the uncontrolled growth of our body's WBC cells. Chronic leukemia is a myeloproliferative disorder characterized by chromosomal translocation. Chronic leukemia patients are more susceptible to bacterial infections, have thrombocytopenia and anemia, and may have an enlarged spleen, which causes pain on the left side. Chronic leukemia has a high incidence rate in men and is the second most common type of cancer in male adults. Women over the age of 50 are more likely to develop this chronic disease. Diagnosis of chronic leukemia is dependent on the phase of the infection, which can be chronic, increased, or blast, and includes chemotherapy, stem cell transplants, and biologic therapies.
