Surgical Lighting System; a Medical Device Used In Operation Rooms to Assist Medical Personnel
Surgical lighting system |
Surgical lighting system plays an important role during surgeries;
intended to assist medical personnel by illuminating a local area or cavity of
the patient during surgery. Surgical lighting systems are of various types,
such as mobile surgical lights, surgical headlights, wall-mounted surgical
lights, and ceiling-mounted surgical lights. Lighting is an integral part of
healthcare infrastructure, widely used in hospital wards, intensive care units,
operation theatres, and other healthcare settings. Three types of lamps are
commonly used in operating theatres, such as Light Emitting Diodes (LED), Gas
Discharge, and Incandescent.
In healthcare settings, the surgical
lighting system is widely by surgeons to perform neurosurgery,
endoscopic surgery, dental surgery, and optical surgery, among others.
Moreover, such lamps provide bright high-intensity, and shadow-free lighting
that helps medical personnel visualize low-contrast and small objects during
surgical procedures. Thus, surgical lighting systems are widely used in
ambulatory surgery centers and operating rooms. The system is a combination of
accessories and several lights. Correct illumination can be achieved by the
quality of light which is measured as lumens per square meter or lux.
A combination of several surgical lights is often referred to as a
surgical light system. High-quality surgical lighting systems contribute to the
success rate of any surgical procedure, as the system provides deep-cavity
illumination, excellent shadow control, & natural color rendition, allowing
medical personnel to consistently and accurately assess and interpret tissue
and vessel appearance. Thus, with the increase in the number of surgical
procedures, demand for high-quality surgical lighting systems is also
increasing at a rapid pace worldwide. LED lighting is the most conventional
light source used for open surgery.
According to the National Center for Health Statistics, around 1.5
million surgical procedures were performed in the United States in 2019. This
in turn is expected to increase the demand for surgical lighting systems in
this region.
