Plant-Based Meat; Designed and Made to Look, Taste, and Cook like Conventional Meat

Plant-Based Meat

Plant-based meat is a food prepared from soy or gluten which provides the same nutritional value as meat. These food products are made from various sources such as jackfruit, soy, peas, wheat gluten, beans, etc., by adding other ingredients and giving it a certain texture so as to mimic, or resemble, the taste and appearance of animal meat. Plant-based meat is prepared using plant and other non-animal products to look, taste, and feel like meat products. Examples include falafel, seitan, tempeh, Mock duck Tofurky, and Beyond Meat burgers.

Moreover, plant-based meat products are healthier compared to regular meat products as they're low in calories and saturated fat. Plant-based meats may also have less zinc and other minerals than regular meat. Research over many years has linked plant-based diets to lower rates of heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers (compared to diets high in meat and other animal products). The American Heart Association (AHA) advised that eating more plant protein instead of meat may improve heart health.

Moreover, according to the Plant-Based Foods Association, in 2020, 57% of all US households purchased plant-based foods (that’s over 71 million households), up from 53 percent in 2019. While, 18% of all US households (22 million households) purchased plant-based meat in 2020, up from 14% in 2019. The number of Americans who follow a vegan diet has grown over the years. With this increase, the popularity of plant-based meats is also growing, including beef substitute, plant-based pork, and plant meat chicken.

The healthiest meat substitute will be vegetarian foods that are natural, high in protein, and minimally processed. Plant-based meat products are extensively adopted in daily diet, owing to the presence of essential nutrients similar to meat products. Plant-based meats are the healthier choice when directly compared to animal meats. Swapping meat for plants reduces saturated fat and increases the fiber and vitamin content of dishes. Plant-based meats are made to mimic properties found within natural meats and are considered to be meat substitutes.
