Liothyronine: Used As a Supplement for the Treatment of Various Thyroid Disorders

Liothyronine

Liothyronine is a supplement for the treatment of hypothyroidism. There are symptoms of hypothyroidism that are quite subtle. Infants born with an underactive thyroid gland can experience an increased risk of heart disease, anemia, and weight gain. However, the more obvious manifestations of this condition can be much more disturbing. For example, a patient with hypothyroidism may develop yellow skin and eyes, a condition called jaundice. Jaundice occurs when the liver is unable to metabolize bilirubin, which is formed when the body recycles damaged red blood cells. Some people with hypothyroidism may even suffer from severe physical retardation.

Liothyronine is taken as a supplement for the treatment of various thyroid disorders and is being studied for the treatment of thyroid cancer. Recently, in January 2021, Zydus Cadila received approval from the USFDA for marketing Liothyronine Sodium Tablets USP, 5mcg, 25mcg, and 50mcg in the U.S.

The main side effect of this medicine is hair loss, which can last for a few months after treatment has started. Although the symptoms of hypothyroidism can be treated with thyroid hormones, it's important to remember that the correct dosage is essential.

There are some possible side effects of liothyronine. In some people, the medicine may cause diarrhea, increased blood sugar, or a rash. Some people even experience nausea and vomiting.  It reduces the levels of theophylline in the body, and it also helps with elimination. While these are not the only benefits of taking this medicine, they are worth considering. The effects of this drug are minor. It is important to note that liothyronine is estrogen and should not be used by pregnant women. It can increase the risk of uterine bleeding. Liothyronine is not suitable for weight reduction. It may not be effective at all for the treatment of high cholesterol, and it has several other side effects. Despite the benefits of liothyronine for weight loss, it's not recommended for use for weight loss.
