Maltodextrin Is a Type of Carbohydrate Used In Variety of Products as a Thickener and As a Food Ingredient

  While it is used as a thickening agent, maltodextrin isn't a healthy ingredient. In fact, it's an artificial sweetener that can spike blood sugar levels. People with diabetes, insulin resistance, or other health conditions should avoid maltodextrin, as it can change the composition of their gut bacteria. This can increase the risk of many diseases, including IBD. Although maltodextrin does not contain any gluten, it is used in a variety of products as a thickener. Its high glycemic index makes it a potentially dangerous additive for people with diabetes. However, maltodextrin is a safe substance in small amounts, and a low-GI diet is beneficial for everyone. 

  Studies have shown that maltodextrin may affect the balance of bacteria in the digestive system. It has been linked to an increase in Salmonella in mice. It has also been linked to increasing E. coli in patients with auto-immune disorders. This means that high intakes of maltodextrin can cause inflammation and gastrointestinal problems. Moreover, it can also result in a lower-than-ideal sugar level, leading to obesity.

  While maltodextrin is a cheap and readily available food additive, it has a high GI. It's a fast-digesting carbohydrate, which means it can be easily absorbed into the bloodstream. Hence, it's a good choice for athletes, as it can replenish the body's sugar stores and help in weight gain. It can also increase muscle mass.

  There are two types of maltodextrin: one is highly resistant to digestion and the other is resistant to it. Research has indicated that a combination of maltodextrin and other foods with maltodextrin in them is harmful to human health. Its use is largely cosmetic. Its adverse effects on gut health are unknown, however, it's important to limit the intake of such foods. A low-quality maltodextrin product will cause the blood sugar to rise, and this can cause a dangerous situation called hypoglycemia. This condition can be reversed by consuming a powder containing maltodextrin. Recently in June 2021, Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory launched concentrated liquid diet products HINEX E –Gel and HINEX E-gel LC, containing maltodextrin in Japan.
